Record Increase in Landline SMS – Growing Faster Than SMS

On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the number of text messages sent to landlines increased by 34% compared with the same period the previous year. This is twice the rate of increase seen in text message traffic to mobile networks, which, according to the major carriers, rose by 10–15%. Half a million users have now discovered the ability to send text messages to landlines.
“This is a clear example of how the market for landline SMS* is starting to take off. The next step is to offer landline SMS services to companies that are switching to mobile PBX solutions with landline numbers on their cell phones, and to consumers who are increasingly transferring their home phone numbers to their cell phones,” says Johan Ågren, CEO of Generic Mobile.
*Landline SMS allows you to send and receive text messages to and from landline numbers. If the recipient has a DECT phone capable of receiving text messages, the message will appear on the phone’s display, and the recipient can also reply to the text message. If the recipient has a landline number saved in their cell phone, they can now also receive the message as a text message on that landline number. Otherwise, the text message will be read aloud.
